چکیده

A prototype has been developed that enables Google Earth to access the ~13 terabyte precipitation archive of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). While other organizations distribute TRMM satellite data for display in Google Earth, this prototype is the first application that allows Google Earth to examine single-orbit files at full resolution in 3D. This archive access tool is intended for researchers, but the paper also presents a separate Google Earth prototype intended for public outreach. The public outreach prototype provides detailed 3D visualization of a single precipitation event. The paper provides instructions for using the prototypes and explains the implementation issues. These prototypes demonstrate strengths and weaknesses of using Google Earth for archive access and scientific visualization. The Precipitation Processing System developed these prototypes as part of its support of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Mission.

Visualization of Sensor Data in Virtual Globes

Virtual Globes have become a common platform for visualizing geographical data. The capability for customization, extensibility and the support of interaction with the visualized elements are some of the aspects to consider when selecting a Virtual Globe for visualization. For visualizing sensor data, aspects such as cardinality, the nature of the data and its temporal and spatial dimensions ha...

Digital Globes - from Virtual to Real

Technological development at the end of the 20 Century opened a new gate for globes. In addition to the traditional analogue physical globes their digital counterparts evolved. Both globe representations are based on a threedimensional model of the real world. Because of increasing availability of global data visualization on a global level gains more significance. Therefore many software devel...

Web GIS in practice X: a Microsoft Kinect natural user interface for Google Earth navigation

This paper covers the use of depth sensors such as Microsoft Kinect and ASUS Xtion to provide a natural user interface (NUI) for controlling 3-D (three-dimensional) virtual globes such as Google Earth (including its Street View mode), Bing Maps 3D, and NASA World Wind. The paper introduces the Microsoft Kinect device, briefly describing how it works (the underlying technology by PrimeSense), as...
